REPORT: SUMANTA MISHRA

18th September 08: The gallant Mariners lost the tantalisingly close semifinal battle with eventual champs TFA. Tata Football Academy goalkeeper Jagroop Singh blocked Souvik Chakraborty's shot in sudden-death to defeat Mohun Bagan 7-6 in tie-breaker on Thursday and set up a title-clash with Sporting Clube de Goa in the 5th Under-19 I-League here.

The closely-contested second semifinal, played at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, saw the teams locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time and 2-2 after extra-time. The final will be played here on Friday.

Right from the beginning, both teams were relentless in raiding each other's citadel. TFA midfielder Jaganath Sana put his side ahead in the 5th minute when he made good use of a cross from Subodh Kumar. Trailing 0-1, Bagan pressed hard and had a couple of close chances before the break.

In the 66th minute, Mohun Bagan forward Malswam Juala scored the equalizer when he tore apart the TFA defence after receiving a pass from the midfield. In extra-time, midfielder Daniel put the green and maroons ahead after converting a penalty in the 95th minute. TFA, however, equalized matters through defender Raju Gaekwad's header, just four minutes from regulation time.

Earlier, Mohun Bagan defeated arch rivals East Bengal 2-1 on 15th September Quarter final clash; Suman Bose and Dipendu Dowary being the scorers.

Mohun Bagan had topped their Group before proceeding to the quarter finals. The group standing was as follows:
		Group D:# TEAMS P W D L GF-GA GDIF PTS1. Mohun Bagan-SAIL FootballAcademy 3 3 0 0 08-02 + 6 092. 04.07.2005 : City AC  3-1  FCI   [At Baruipur]
Goal Scorers : Sankar Oraon , Tetea Tlau , Lalhimthara
It was a first time in the big arena for the young boys . They first time the young cadets were playing professionally in the Kolkata Maidan. With young blood bubbling and with a lot of shaky nerves , the MBSFA cadets entered the stage under the City AC banner. However , it was Sankar Oraon - the captain drew first blood much against the run of the play off a cross by Tetea A Tlau . After that it was MBSFA who was all over the turf . The young legs proved too agile compared to the heavy and rough legs of the foodmen . It was now Teteas turn to strike . 2-0 . However , FCI reduced the margin off a looping counter attack . But ultimately , City AC struck again , now it was Lalhimthara . City won 3-1 !

09.07.2005 : Khidderpore 1-5 City AC  [At Baruipur]
Goal Scorers : Sankar Oraon (2) , Sanjay Boro , Vasum , Lalhimthara
The second match proved to be a great one for MBSFA cadets . Sankar Oraon scored in the 21st minute and scored again five mins later . Sanjay Boro then added one to his kitty . In the second half , Vasum and Lalhimthara completed the rout before Khidderpore got a consolation goal . Well , Hats Off to you young guns ! City AC emerged the group champions.

12.07.2005 : City AC 3-1 Garalgacha [At Janai]  Pre Quarter finals
Goal Scorers : Sankar Oraon (2) , Lalhimthara

The opponents perhaps knew that they wont be able to match the skills and speed of the academy cadets . They decided to play in rough . However the young Sankar Oraon opened the score again in the 25th min and Lalhimthara made it 2-0 in the 35th. Garalagacha got one back but in the mean time it was young Malswamzualla who was shown the red card for a rough tackle. Sankar Oron ended the scoring by jamming in his second goal in the 80th minute .

14.07.2005 : Railway FC 0-3 City AC [At Janai] Quarter Final
Goal Scorers : Sankar Oraon (2) , Lalhimthara

Rough tackles and rough moves awaited the young gun right from the word go . But the academy cadets were very much prepared this time . The were very cleverly evading the sliding tackles attempted by the Railwaymen . And it was the charismatic captain Sankar Oraon who again pumped in a brace , and Lalhimthara added one more to his kitty to derail the Railway men .

16.07.2005 : Eastern Railway 1-0 City AC [At Makardah] Semi Final
Goal Scorers : -------

The honeymoon finally came to and end due to a small defensive lapse by the young cadets . They started quite well though , playing short quick passes . However , Eastern Railway scored the all important goal much against the run of the play . Although the MBSFA cadets tried many a time and got about 3 openings and struck the woodwork twice , they failed to score and reach the final . However , it was a really spirited and heartwarming display by the MBSFA guys . They showed that they are ready for the big stage at this very early age . Way to Go MBSFA ! Great Going !
